DOWNLOAD PLANTNET, THE APP TO IDENTIFY PLANTS

by GPaper StaffAugust 6, 2017

Although many call it the “Shazam of plants”, PlantNet is more like Wikipedia in its (Universal) vocation and in its approaches (scientific rigor, but collaborative). This is a free smartphone application that is available for iOS and Android devices.

Developed by a group of French botanical researchers, this app intends to get us out of doubt before those plants that we love and we do not know how to name. You make the photo, mark its category (fruit, flower, or plant) and the application returns the common name and the plant scientist or gives you similar results if it does not match 100% in any entry.

It also works the other way around: if you think you’ve found a plant that is not inscribed in this census of the planet’s plant population, you can contribute. Of course, before publishing your contribution, those responsible oversee your proposals.

In addition to the name, PlantNet tells you the characteristics and properties of plants through amenas (as much as possible) and simple explanations. Its creators (members of the French Cirad, IRA, Inria / IRD and the Tela Botanic Network) have asked us to spread their crowd funding campaign, so everyone to donate!

Pros: It’s free, intuitive, well designed and very open to collaboration.
Cons: The plant should be seen clearly, something not always possible. The project could disappear if they do not get enough donations.
